IDS LiveReview :- Statutory Warning: Do not for a minute forget that the year is 2012, because movies like this transport you straight back to 80s kitsch. But it’s probably because of Say Yes To Love that doomsday warnings were created.
Struggling with his past, that’s what the lead character, Vijay ( Aasad Mirza) is constantly doing. A disturbing incident of sexual molestation haunts him through his growing years, and induces a fear of the opposite sex. His excessively doting father (overtly touchy-feely affectionate Aditya Raj Kapoor), obsessed with his son’s non-existent love-life, finds the perfect love-trap for beta; Sara Jones (Nazia Hussain), an ambitious bar-dancer, willing to play the game of love for a few bucks more. For the umpteenth time, boy falls in love with girl, they get jiggy on mountain-tops, go under satin sheets and make-out in the woods. This boy even randomly runs naked in freezing cold(?). There are more cliches in the mix, but don’t bother.
Debutant Aasad Mirza’s Papa Kehte Hai-like entry with a song on his Dadu (Dad) is almost embarrassing. Other than smooth dance moves, the boy seems sincere but his almost deadpan expressions leave us dumbstruck. Nazia Hussain, at times reminds us of a young Preity Zinta, with much less zing and zintadili than the dimpled darling. Though she has an effervescent onscreen persona, dances naturally and is likeable in parts, her expressions are devoid of drama and emotion. If Aditya Raj Kapoor has evaded the screen for so many years, you can’t blame him. The lesser the better.
While Marukh Mirza Beig might have given us a string of youthful, musical love-stories in the 80s, his huge problem is that he seems stuck in time. The beautiful locations in Mussoorie have been captured well, but that’s all we remember about this movie. Cliched dialogues (including Aasad’s ‘Dadu main kya karu?’) leave us emotionally molested. You wish there was something going right for this plot.
Maybe 80s action is back (Dabangg, Singham); but this romance from 20 years ago knocks us out more than Salman and Ajay ever could!
